Summary
In spring 1993, a survey was made in canton Ticino (southern Switzerland) and in adjacent areas of Italy in order to locate and map spawning areas of Chondrostoma soetta, a species noted as “rare” in the Red List of fish in Switzerland. Only six spawning sites were found: four in tributaries of Lago di Lugano and two in tributaries in the northern (Swiss) part of Lago Maggiore. The much larger, southern (Italian) area of Lago Maggiore was not included in this survey. In 1993, spawning was observed at the end of April during a short four day period. The characteristic features of the spawning grounds are described and possible causes for the decline of this species are discussed.
