Summary

Experience with patients with temporomandibular joint ankylosis resulting from earlier surgery suggests that the difference between severe fibrous restriction and true ankylosis is academic, that ankylosis is more frequently encountered after removal of alloplasts than while they are still in place, that costochondral grafting without concomitant placement of a dermal interface leads to a rather high rate of re-ankylosis, and that programmed physical therapy is not a major factor in determining the ultimate success in this group of patients.
