Abstract
Fate has decreed that it falls upon me to talk to you here in this very special place about a very special person: Vladimir Petrovich Potapov. I first met Vova Potapov (as he was then known, while I was Mischa Livšic) when he entered Odessa University in 1934. He was then twenty years old and had transferred to the University after leaving the Odessa Conservatory of Music; I was a second-year student in the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics.
