Models for the Formation of Oriented F-actin Structures in the Cytoskeleton

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Mathematics and Biosciences in Interaction ((MBI))

Abstract

The cytoskeleton, the molecular scaffolding of eucaryotic cells, enables a cell to adopt a variety of shapes and to carry out various functions including motility. It consists of numerous proteins and actin filaments which act in concert in response to internal and/or external stimuli and may exhibit physical properties similar to a liquid or a solid at different times and at different locations in the cellular cytoplasm.
