Activity and Distribution of the Endothelin-Converting Enzyme in the Lung

  • Chapter
Pulmonary Actions of the Endothelins

Abstract

Within the intricate capillary and bronchial network of the lungs are found important cellular sources for eicosanoids, cytokines, surfactant and the potent endothelium derived-vasoconstrictor, endothelin-1 [1–3]. In large mammals, the lungs contain only 12% of total blood volume at any given time yet the cross-sectional area of the pulmonary circulation represents 40% of that of the entire vasculature [4]. This would suggest that the pulmonary vascular endothelium has the potential capacity of producing and concentrating in the lungs a significant portion of the total vascular-derived endothelin.
