Abstract
Primary sensory neurons interface between the external environment and the central nervous system. To detect and transfer to the CNS information describing the stimuli that impinge upon the body, the PSN have highly specialized adaptations. These include the expression of a broad number of ion channels, receptors, neurotransmitters and neuromodulators, together with the establishment of highly ordered patterns of innervation of the peripheral target and central neurons.
