Abstract
In China, virus resistant tobacco has been field tested since 1991, and it has been used in industrial tobacco manufacturing for national consumption since 1992. The cultivated area exceded 1 million ha corresponding to 5% of total tobacco plantation in China. At that time, China had no biosafety regulations. This means the field tests were carried out without national control. Recently, Chinese government issued safety guidelines for field testing of transgenic crop plants. Thereafter, all field tests of transgenic crop plants are being reviewed based on the guidelines.
