Abstract

I knew Maz’ya’s work long before I met him. Whenever I looked in works on functional analysis, potential theory, and elsewhere, it seemed I found some important contribution by Vladimir Maz’ya. Although the thought of meeting him was far from my mind when I was invited to spend part of the winter of 1991 at the Institut Mittag-Leffler, my feeling when I was introduced to him was one of seeing for the first time up close a person you felt you knew from his writing.
