Abstract
When DEKORP, the German continental reflection seismic program, started its first deep seismic survey in 1984, no one would have expected that this project would run for 14 consecutive years. During this time it became the major focus of deep seismic research in Germany. Its open organisational structure, comprising separate executive and steering committees, admitted the participation of many geoscientific institutions and university institutes in the planning and performing of research. Scientifically, the DEKORP activities were inspired by similar foreign research programs already in existence at that time, such as COCORP and BIRPS. DEKORP was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research (BMBF) and complemented by special funding programs of the German science foundation (DFG), dedicated to the lower crust and the Variscan orogenic belt.
