Abstract
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is well known as a high performance computing site with considerable computer power installed. Since 1983 ECMWF has been involved in parallel computing through early exposure to the Cray line of vector parallel processor machines. Since 1984 ECMWF has organized a biannual workshop on the use of parallel processing in meteorology, with an ever increasing attendance (the next workshop will be held in 1994). A way pursued to build up expertise in parallel processing is the continued participation in EC funded R&D projects, as e.g. GENESIS (1989–91), PPPE (1992–95) and GPMIMD2 (1993–95/96). In 1992 the European RAPS benchmarking effort was initiated and so far has turned out to be very successful. The efforts at ECMWF are aimed at all aspects of parallel programming which are of concern for an operational high performance computing centre This paper will briefly introduce the overall effort into parallel programming and then focus especially on the ongoing PPPE work. It demonstrates the usefulness of performance analysis and visualization tools by giving examples from our ongoing code parallelization effort.
