Abstract
Biodiversity is hierarchically organized. The biotic community of an ecosystem consists of various species that are characterized by numerous phylogenetic relationships. Each evolutionary lineage has its own species diversity. Intraspecies variability among individuals exists in phenotype and genetic constitution. Knowledge about the origin and the maintenance of any kind of biological variability is therefore necessary for the successful conservation of species.
