Abstract

In recent decades, public interest in research has grown. Many countries have initiated task-oriented research programs. The top-down approach, however, is not sufficient to promote collaborative, goal-oriented research for the sake of society. Scientists must assume greater responsibility. The question of relevance must be discussed more explicitly in scientific circles and a greater public role assumed, including public teaching and speaking out in the media. Responsibility must become a fundamental ethical principle of science.
