Abstract
The years between 1944 when O. Zariski established the resolution of singularities for three-dimensional varieties, and 1964 when H. Hironaka completed the tour de force of the general case (char p = 0), seem to have passed without any activities in this field except for Abhyankar’s work [Ab 1]. The present note is meant to recall that this is not the whole truth. There have been undertaken great efforts but they remained without any real succes. These false respectively incomplete proofs which were published in well renowned journals and their very thorough and examplaric reviews in the “Mathematical Reviews” are set out to be important steps and should not be forgotten completely.
