Abstract
Glucocorticoids offer a mode of treatment for arthritis that has been both seductive and controversial. The history of their use is linked with some of the most important advances in medical science this century. Philip Hench and his colleagues (who were awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering the anti-inflammatory properties of glucocorticoids) used them in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with dramatic results [1]. The subsequent widespread use of glucocorticoids as anti-inflammatory agents made its mark in many conditions, with an inflammatory or auto-immune basis.
