Abstract

In this chapter, we introduce the definition of the simplest quantized enveloping algebra and derive some of its most basic properties. The first version of this algebra was defined by Kulish and Reshetikhin [129] in 1981, but it is fair to say that-like many of the best ideas in mathematics-its beauty and importance relative to an amazingly wide range of topics in mathematics and physics only became gradually apparent over the succeeding years.
