Abstract
A shape memory wire dragged through a heating chamber undergoes external heating by conduction and internal heating due to the latent heat of the phase transition that is triggered by the supply of heat. Depending on parameters the wire may undergo a rapid transition to a stationary state, or a limit cycle in phase fraction and temperature, or a damped oscillation to a vortex point.
