Abstract
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)1 was negotiated under the United Nation Environment Programme (UNEP). The final text was adopted in 1992 and opened for signature at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro the same year. The Convention came into force on the 29th of December 1993. Today 177 countries including all industrialised countries with the exception of the USA have ratified and are Parties to the Convention.
