Abstract
In this chapter we compute the first elementary ideal of a 3-manifold from the torsion τ. This computation allows us to establish fundamental properties of τ which will be used throughout the book. At the end of the chapter we study the (twisted) Alexander polynomials of a 3-manifold and compute them from τ. This computation will be used in Chapter IV.
