Zusammenfassung

Die Melastomataceae sind Kräuter, Sträucher, Bäume, Lianen oder Epiphyten mit nebenblattlosen, ganzrandigen, gegen- oder quirlständigen Blättern, die meist bogenförmige Hauptnerven besitzen. Blüten meist zwittrig und regelmässig, gross. Kelch und Krone 3–5zählig, einer Blütenröhre (Hypanthium; Kelchröhre) aufsitzend; Staubblätter meist doppelt so viele wie Kronblätter, sehr mannigfaltig gestaltet (Anhängsel am Konnektiv). Fruchtknoten mittel- oder unterständig (wenn mit der Blütenröhre verwachsen), 2- bis vielfächerig mit meist vielen Samenanlagen mit 2 Integumenten pro Fach. Beeren- oder Kapselfrüchte. Den oft kleinen Samen fehlt ein Endosperm.
