Zusammenfassung
Sträucher oder Bäume mit ungeteilten, meist gegenständigen und ledrigen Blättern ohne deutliche Nebenblätter. Blüten in der Regel regelmässig, zwittrig und auffallend gefärbt. Kelch und Krone meist 4- oder 5zählig; Krone in der Regel freiblättrig (bei Eucalyptus wird die vollständig verwachsenblättrige Krone beim Aufblühen als Mütze abgestossen). Staubblätter zahlreich, ihre Filamente bei vielen Sippen auffallend gefärbt. Fruchtknoten unterständig (mit der sogenannten Kelchröhre oder der hohlen Blütenachse vollständig verwachsen), 1-5-fächerig mit meist zahlreichen Samenanlagen mit 2 Integumenten in jedem Fache. Früchte beeren-, Steinfrucht-, kapsel- oder nussartig. Samen mit kräftigem Embryo; Endosperm fehlend oder dünn (Aleuronschicht).
