In Vivo Detection of Activated Lymphocytes in Immune- Mediated Diseases by 123I-Interleukin-2 Scintigraphy

  • Chapter
Radioactive Isotopes in Clinical Medicine and Research

Summary

In this study we describe the use of 123I-interleukin-2 scintigraphy in patients affected by chronic inflammatory diseases as a non invasive technique for in vivo detection and quantitation of the severity and extent of the inflammatory process. We conclude that 123I-IL2 scintigraphy is a specific and sensitive noninvasive technique to quantify in vivo the severity of the mononuclear cell infiltrate in tissues. It provides information of the whole affected organ and may have relevant clinical implications for early diagnosis of several autoimmune diseases as well as to evaluate the severity and extent of inflammation during the follow-up.
