Entsprechend der Dichtefunktion einer Zufallsvariablen wird jetzt f(x, y), die gemeinsame Dichtefunktion zweier Variablen, gebraucht. Im eindimensionalen Fall gab die Fläche unter der Dichtefunktion f i (x) (über dem Intervall [a, b]), also \( \int_a^b {{f_1}\left( x \right)dx} \) die Wahrscheinlichkeit, daß a ≤ x ≤ b. Jetzt ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit, daß a ≤ x ≤ b und c ≤ y ≤ d, das Volumen unter der Dichtefunktion f(x, y) (über dem Rechteck a ≤ x ≤ b, c ≤y ≤d):
