Abstract

Physicians are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of fungi as etiologic agents of a variety of diseases. In the past, fungi were considered to be causes of inhalant respiratory allergies and rare, frequently obscure, infections. With recent advances in the use of chemotherapy and radiation treatment, opportunistic fungal infections are increasing. Recent clinical observations also suggest that excessive environmental exposure to fungi may cause a variety of symptoms compatible with a toxic reaction.
