Abstract
Asthma is a heterogeneous condition of multifactorial etiology. Worldwide, the prevalence of asthma varies from population to population, and with such factors as inbreeding, low altitude, damp climate, urbanization, and industrialization. In New York City, asthma is the second major cause after accidents of pediatric hospitalizations1 and is the most frequent reason for school absenteeism.2
