The Epidemiology of Cigarette Smoking and Parkinson’s Disease

  • Chapter
Effects of Nicotine on Biological Systems II

Part of the book series: Advances in Pharmacological Sciences ((APS))

Summary

Numerous studies have reported an inverse association between cigarette smoking and Parkinson’s disease (PD); these consistently indicate that smokers have about half the risk of PD of non-smokers. The association appears to be causal: it is consistent, graded, and found in most population subgroups. It is possible that a “pre-Parkinson’s personality” could explain the association, but this seems unlikely. The relationship between smoking and other dopamine-related processes provides further support for a causal relationship.
