Abstract
Hypothermic extracorporeal circulation in open-heart surgery is usually followed by a phase of postoperative hyperthermia. This hyperthermia is part of a systemic inflammatory response, which can lead to organ dysfunction and postoperative morbidity. In recent years, it has been found that endotoxin is released during cardiopulmonary bypass (1,2,3). Endotoxin (bacterial lipopolysaccharide) is known as a potent pyrogenic substance and triggers the release of several fever-inducing cytokines including interleukin-6 (IL-6) (4). In human volunteers, administration of endotoxin produces pathophysiologic changes similar to those observed in patients after cardiopulmonary bypass (4). Aim of this study was to detect a correlation between endotoxin and interleukin-6 release after cardiopulmonary bypass and the degree of postoperative hyperthermia.
