Abstract

The brain and nervous system are especially prone to free radical damage since the membrane lipids are very rich in polyunsaturated fatty acid side chains, and areas of the human brain are rich in iron which plays an essential role in generating reactive oxygen species (Halliwell, 1989). In addition, the brain reportedly utilizes about one-fifth of the oxygen taken in each day (Ames et al., 1981). Therefore, neurons are especially vulnerable to free radical attack.
