Free radicals in the pathogenesis of diabetes and its complications

Summary

The successful defense against hostile and irritating influences is a remarkable ability of living structures. If they fail, they are condemned to death; if they are only partially successful, the result will be disease or aging. Free radicals seem to be the common effectors at the end of many chains of reaction triggered by exogenous and endogenous noxae. Thus coping with the production and defense of free radicals will be a major determinant of integrity or destruction of living structures. Diabetes mellitus is an apparent example of a disorder which is caused by free radicals and which itself results in their generation, thus producing secondary diseases. It is the aim of this review to describe our present knowledge of the role of free radicals in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes and to present some views of their role in the development of diabetic complications.
