Abstract
The singular value decomposition was probably first introduced by J. W. Gibbs and pseudo-inverses probably by E. H. Moore. The importance of these concepts in numerical algebra (in particular in statistical applications) has been emphasized notably by I. J. Good and by G. H. Golub. There are many ways of defining these objects, and we choose one of those appropriate in the present context.
