Summary

5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-Ht) causes a variety of effects on human heart through several 5-HT receptor subtypes. Both 5-HT1 -like receptors and 5-HT2 receptors in large coronary arteries mediate spasm. It is likely that vagal 5-HT3 receptors mediate reflex bradycardia while sinoatrial 5-HT4-like receptors mediate tachycardia. Right atrial 5-HT4-like receptors mediate increases in contractile force and relaxation through a cyclic AMP-dependent pathway.
