Proteins as Counterions of DNA: A New Model of Nucleoprotamine Structure

  • Chapter
Water and Ions in Biomolecular Systems

Part of the book series: Advances in Life Sciences ((ALS))

Summary

Both the C-terminal region of histone H1 and protamines have a tendency to acquire the a helical form in a large percentage. We suggest that such tendency is enhanced upon interaction with DNA. A new nucleoprotamine model based on this concept is developed, with the protamine molecules in a partial helical form running in parallel with the DNA molecules, each protamine binding together three DNA molecules. Similar structures may appear locally in the regions of interaction of DNA with histone H1 in chromatin.
