Abstract

In a previous review [1] written for this series I presented an account of some of my experiences during my 25-year tenure with CIBA and then CIBA-Geigy. These reflections emphasized primarily my role in management, especially as it related to my responsibilities as Executive Vice President and Director of Research, and the background related to decisions concerning the research and development process and the decision-making which led to bringing certain medicinal products into the physician’s armamentarium. Several cogent factors associated with organizational matters and operational principles were also stressed. These and other thoughts were presented in a retrospective account and served to summarize my career as a manager of large multi-faceted research and development programs On reflection, what experiences prepared me for this role?

This scientific autobiography is dedicated to my wife Ruby, who for 45 years has been a staunch supporter of all my endeavors.
