Abstract

Since the formulation of the Raisz hypothesis asserting that prostaglandin-E (PGE) was responsible for bone resorption [1], arachidonic acid metabolites, particularly PGE2 have been the focus of a great number of experimental bone studies. Primarily carried out in vitro, these studies showed that particular cyclooxygenase products are the mediators of osteoclast activity and consequently bone resorption. Considerable data, especially whole animal studies, dispute this widely held hypothesis.
