Abstract
There must surely be general agreement with Dick [1] that “the development of immunisation has been one of the most striking features in the control of infectious disease in the twentieth century”. Yet concern must be expressed in 1979, the International Year of the Child, that immunization against the major childhood diseases reaches less than 10% of children in developing countries [2], and that in South-East Asia alone an estimated 3 million children die every year before reaching the age of 12 months although about half of these deaths could have been prevented by vaccines [3].
