Abstract

Recorded history informs us that the earliest specific remedies to be used in the practice of medicine were those effective against parasite infections. Extract of male fern (Aspidium felix-mas), still prescribed today for tapeworms, was used by Theophrastus of Eresus in the 3rd Century B.C. [1]. Santonin, an extract of wormwood (Artemesia maritima), widely used for treatment of Ascaris as late as 1937 [2], was recommended for treatment of worms by Dioscurides in A.D. 60 [1]. A British dispensatory of 1789 [3] states that it is ‘celebrated for its anthelminthic virtues’.
