Abstract

In 1964, an attempt by the author to summarize the then current views of the basic mechanisms of drug action ended with the prediction that exciting developments in this area of pharmacology could be anticipated within the subsequent few years [1]. At that time the only drug receptors that had been isolated and purified were certain soluble and membrane-bound enzymes and nucleic acids with which specific drugs interact to produce their pharmacologic effects. Membrane-bound drug receptors which do not have a known enzymic function have been more difficult to characterize and isolate although in recent years, especially since 1970, considerable progress has been made. It is appropriate, therefore, in this jubilee volume, to review the recent advances that have occurred in this rapidly developing area.
