Abstract

Berberine, an alkaloid present in most species of the Berberis (N.O. Berberidaceae) was used in Indian indigenous medicine as a febrifuge and carminative and as a healing ointment in indolent ulcers. The general pharmacology of the drug has been worked out by Chopra, Dikshit and Chowhan [1], Shanbag, Kulkarni and Gaitonde [2], Sabir and Bhide [3] and Seery and Beiter [4] have demonstrated the inhibitory action of berberine on Trypanosoma equiperdum. Berberis dried extract has been used in the chemotherapy of oriental sore.
