Abstract

The fact that severe tetanus carries a significant mortality even after the elimination of spasms by curarization has excited attention in recent years [1]. Some of these patients have been reported to show autonomic dysfunction in the form of excessive sympathetic nervous activity. This state, it has been postulated, adversely affects cardiovascular function and could potentially induce a fatal cardiac arrhythmia.
