Abstract

The treatment of hookworm disease is still unsatisfactory and the search of newer and more effective drugs continues. Drugs currently employed against hookworm infection lack consistent efficacy at the desirable therapeutic levels against both the common species of the hookworm — Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus, responsible for human hookworm disease. Recently, a new drug, bitoscanate — phenylene diisothiocyanate-1,4 — has been shown to be effective against a variety of nematodes, both in experimental animals and in man. This drug has also been shown to be effective against both the species of the hookworm.
