Abstract
A recent survey of the social problems of tropical countries suggested that the communicable diseases were either controlled, or that they would be of little importance within the next few years [10]. This observation was followed by a wave of protest from scientists, whose interests lay in this field; they pointed out that the picture was much too optimistic.
