The Tetracyclines

  • Chapter

Abstract

The tetracyclines are a group of antibiotics having an identical 4-ring carbocyclic structure as a basic skeleton and differing from each other chemically only by substituent variation. The popularity of the tetracyclines with the medical practitioners and the very large number of prescriptions written for them testifies eloquently to their importance to modern medicine. In addition, certain of these antibiotics have been used in very large quantities as additives to the food of meat-producing animals where they improve the efficiency of converting animal feeds to meat protein.
