Abstract

The adrenergic receptor has been known for sixty years. Sir Henry Dale named it the receptive mechanism for adrenaline. Since the time of Cannon the existence of at least two kinds of adrenergic receptors have been known. Early on these were named for the principal type of response evoked: E for excitatory, I for inhibitory. The modern concept and nomenclature of the adrenergic receptor was introduced from this laboratory [1]. There are still two kinds of receptors, alpha and beta. Each can be delineated by structure-activity studies of specific agonists. And each can be delineated by specific blocking agents. The specific blocking agents for the beta adrenergic receptor are of fairly recent origin and are the subject of this presentation.
