Abstract

It is a happy coincidence that the year 1969 in which this review is being written, marks the centenary of the synthesis by Griess [1] of the first derivative of quinazoline, though the name of the hypothetical basic compound, unknown at that time, was given as ‘quinazoline’ only in 1887 by Weddige [2] and quinazoline itself was synthesised in 1903 by Gabriel [3]. Paul and Busch [4] suggested the following numbering which is still in use today (I).
