Abstract

Since the first review on cholesterol and its relation to atherosclerosis was written for this series a decade ago by Lin and Chen [1], great strides have been made in the field. Although the role of lipids and cholesterol in atherosclerosis has not been fully clarified to the satisfaction of the clinician, medicinal chemistry has been quite successful during this interval in showing that a diverse group of compounds is capable of reducing blood lipid levels in many animal species and in man. It is of special interest to scan through the galenical compositions as outlined by Lin and Chen, and to compare these with the well-characterized synthetic hypolipidemic agents which have emerged since that time.
