Abstract
This review surveys briefly some of the contributions of medicinal chemistry to medicine of the past 30 years and identifies some new problems. This period was ushered in dramatically with the discovery of chemotherapeutic sulfonamides. Succeeding years witnessed a veritable revolution in medical practice largely stemming from drug discoveries to which medicinal chemists made major contributions. This also represents the productive period of many individuals who are now reaching the concluding years of their active careers in this type of research.
