Abstract
The angiogenic process can be summarized as follows: in response to angiogenic factors, endothelial cells are activated, their adjacent basement membrane is degraded and thin cytoplasmic processes are extended in the direction of the angiogenic stimulus. The endothelial cells then migrate into the surrounding extracellular matrix within which they form a capillary sprout. Sprout maturation is completed by the formation of a patent capillary lumen and reconstitution of the basement membrane [1].
