Abstract
The first mitotic cycle of mesophyll protoplasts has been the object of considerable interest, mostly because this is the most crucial stage of development when we wish to obtain cell colony formation. However, in addition to their technological value, mesophyll protoplasts are characterised by the fact that they are derived from cells which photosynthesise but which are no longer synthesising a cell wall and show no mitotic activity. In culture these protoplasts lose their photosynthetic activity and recover the ability to synthesise a cell wall and carry out cell division. They thus constitute an excellent material for the study of mitosis, its control and its relationship with cell wall synthesis.
