A practical problem arising in the automated design and mass-production of car body shells and similar objects is to create mathematically a smooth surface of prescribed general shape, with the possibility of applying local modifications or of introducing additional constraints without destroying its visual appeal. We shall discuss briefly some mathematical questions of approximation theory suggested by this work.
