A Microcomputer Based DTA

  • Chapter
Thermal Analysis

Abstract

Most workers in thermal analysis are undoubtedly aware that Perkin-Elmer has been the exclusive manufacturer of thermal null Differential Scanning Calorimeters, which embody our patented power compensation principle, since 1963. Because of their unique construction and operating principle, thermal null DSC’s inherently have unprecedented calorimetric accuracy, faster response, and exceptional resolution. However, as a direct consequence of their unique construction, it has not been possible to design a thermal null DSC that operates to high temperatures. For example, the upper temperature limit of the DSC-2C is 725°C. Consequently, at Perkin-Elmer we have been involved in designing a high temperature DTA, which will take full advantage of the available microcomputer technology and greatly help the advance of this important technique. The result of this project is the Model DTA 1700 High Temperature Differential Thermal Analyzer, shown in Figure 1. The Model DTA 1700 is a high temperature microcomputer based DTA which offers a highly sophisticated degree of instrument control and signal conditioning.
