Abstract
Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) is widely regarded as an important analytical tool in pharmaceutical research. It is well-known, however, that experimental factors can influence the results considerably. These factors relate to:

1.
The adjustment of the apparatus, such as heating rate and calorimetric sensitivity.

2.
The sample’s mass, packing and porosity, particle size (distributions), pretreatment and dilution.
-
3.
The reference material’s mass, nature and pretreatment.
-
4.
The atmosphere: thermal conductivity, oxidising or inert nature, static or flowing conditions.
